Printable letter link : https://5il.co/qboi Following Guidance from the Texas Education Agency, Spurger ISD to Continue Face-Covering Requirement On Thursday, March 4, 2021, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) held a statewide conference call with superintendents to discuss the Governor’s Executive Order GA-34. Following TEA’s guidance, Spurger ISD will continue its current practice of requiring face coverings for its students and employees. This decision will be reviewed at our upcoming Board meeting on March 18, 2021. The current TEA guidance states, in part (page 7): “Schools must comply with the following requirements: Every student, teacher, or staff member shall wear a mask over the nose and mouth when inside a school building, school facility, facility used for school activities, or when in an outdoor space on school property…”. This guidance also applies to any adult visitor on a campus or school facility for any event or activity. Spurger ISD will continue its social distancing and cleaning procedures as outlined in our re-entry plan Because the definition of “close contact” has not changed per the CDC or TEA guidelines, the elimination of masks would require a greater number of students/staff to be quarantined in the event there is contact with a person who tests positive (or is presumed positive) for COVID-19. Therefore, we have concluded that continuing to wear masks reduces the likelihood of having to quarantine large groups of students at one time. We know that students learn best in a face-to-face setting and Spurger ISD is striving to provide a safe learning environment for all students and staff while also keeping our campuses open. We acknowledge (and share) everyone’s desire for a return to normal, and we all expect for the safety of our staff and students to remain the top priority in our school district. Spurger ISD is grateful that educators have now been included in the phased vaccine rollout. As vaccines continue to be widely distributed to educators and all citizens, district officials will assess and reevaluate the face-covering requirement each month with the Board, in light of the most recent data available to us. As always, we wish to thank our employees, students and their families for their understanding and cooperation as we look forward to finishing the school year on a positive note. In support of our efforts to keep our kids in school, please continue to send your student to school with his/her mask each day. Morgan Wright Superintendent Spurger ISD

NOTIFICATION OF CONFIRMED COVID-19 CASE ON CAMPUS 03/05/2021 Dear Parent/Guardian, In keeping with Spurger ISD’s practices to respond to COVID-19, we are notifying all student families that a student member who was lab-confirmed to have COVID-19 was present on the JH campus on 03/04/2021. You are receiving this notice, because you or your child was present on the campus in the seven days prior to the individual’s diagnosis of COVID-19. Due to privacy requirements, we will not be releasing the name of the individual or details that may identify him or her. Spurger ISD’s Mitigation Plan provides for extensive cleaning and sanitization protocols, as well as social distancing procedures, including the wearing of face masks. As such, CDC guidance provides that the risk of someone contracting COVID-19 from the staff member is low and this notice is being provided in an abundance of caution. The local health department has begun a case investigation and will contact any individuals determined to be in close contact with the infected individual. All students and staff that came into close contact will be directly notified no later than 03/05/2021. Those that were in close contact will remain off campus for up to 10 days to ensure they do not have the virus, so that there will not be any further spread. We will keep you apprised of further updates. Any of the following symptoms indicate a possible COVID-19 infection: Temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by mouth; Sore throat; New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (or, for students with a chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline); Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain; or New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever. If you or any member of the JH School community does begin experiencing any of these symptoms in a way that is not typical, we encourage you to contact your physician. We encourage anyone in the JH School community who is lab-confirmed to have COVID19 to please notify our school by contacting (409) 429-3464. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to huttop@spurgerisd.org or visit our website at https://www.spurgerisd.org/ . Sincerely, Morgan Wright
